  • What is coaching and what are the differences with other types of support?
ICF (the International Coaching Federation) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaching is a client-driven process. The coach’s responsibility is to: 1) Discover, clarify and align with what the client wants to achieve. 2) Encourage client self-discovery. 3) Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies. 4) Hold the client responsible and accountable. The coaching process helps clients improve their outlook on work and life, while improving their leadership skills and unlocking their potential. Professional coaching focuses on setting goals, creating outcomes and managing personal change. Sometimes it’s helpful to understand coaching by distinguishing it from other personal or organizational support professions, as ICF (the International Coaching Federation) describes later in this paragraph. 1) Therapy: Therapy deals with healing pain, dysfunction and conflict within an individual or in relationships. The focus is often on resolving difficulties arising from the past that hamper an individual’s emotional functioning in the present, improving overall psychological functioning, and dealing with the present in more emotionally healthy ways. Coaching, on the other hand, supports personal and professional growth based on self-initiated change in pursuit of specific actionable outcomes. Coaching is future-focused, and the coaching relationship emphasizes action, accountability and follow-through. 2) Consulting: Individuals or organizations retain consultants for their expertise. While consulting approaches vary widely, the assumption is the consultant will diagnose problems and prescribe and, sometimes, implement solutions. With coaching, the assumption is that individuals or teams are capable of generating their own solutions, with the coach supplying supportive, discovery-based approaches and frameworks. 3) Mentoring: A mentor is an expert who provides wisdom and guidance based on his or her own experience. Mentoring may include advising, counseling and coaching. The coaching process does not include advising or counseling, and focuses instead on individuals or groups setting and reaching their own objectives. 4) Training: Training programs are based on objectives set out by the trainer or instructor. Though objectives are clarified in the coaching process, they are set by the individual or team being coached, with guidance provided by the coach. Training also assumes a linear learning path that coincides with an established curriculum. Coaching is less linear, without a set curriculum. 5) Athletic Development: Though sports metaphors are often used, professional coaching is different from sports coaching. The athletic coach is often seen as an expert who guides and directs the behavior of individuals or teams based on his or her greater experience and knowledge. Professional coaches possess these qualities, but their experience and knowledge of the individual or team determines the direction. Additionally, professional coaching does not focus on behaviors that are being executed poorly or incorrectly. Instead, the focus is on identifying opportunity for development based on individual strengths and capabilities. Coaching is not meant for emergencies or crisis situations. If you are experiencing an emergency, contact your doctor and / or go to your nearest emergency room.
  • Who normally start a coaching path?
According to ICF (the International Coaching Federation), the client in coaching is a person who wants to achieve a higher level of performance, learning or satisfaction. There are several reasons why a person may choose to meet a coach. 1) There is something at stake, a challenge, a protracted goal or a great opportunity, and it is urgent, important or exciting, or all of these things together. 2) There is a desire to achieve results more quickly. 3) There is a need to reverse the direction taken in work or in personal life. 4) There is a lack of clarity in the person in the face of the choices to be made. 5) There is no balance between work and private life and this generates unwanted consequences. 6) The person has not identified his main talents nor does he know how to best use them. 7) There is a need and desire to be better organized and to be able to better manage oneself.
  • Are there any differences in effectiveness between face-to-face coaching and online coaching?
Online coaching found to have same effectiveness as face-to-face coaching. According to several researches (e.g. "A comparison between face-to-face and distance coaching practices", RM Berry, JS Ashby, PBGnilka, KB Matheny, 2011, Consulting Psychology Journal) there are no significant differences between face-to-face and online coaching: the alliance that is created between coach and client is equally effective regardless of the method used. With our coaches, you get the same professionalism and quality you would expect from an in-office coach, but with the ability to support you when and how you want.
